French Guiana is a coastal region of France and a country in South America. French is the official language of the country. The neighbouring countries are Brazil and Suriname. The country is famous for its nature and wilderness. It can be said that French Guiana is a salad bowl as so many nations live altogether in the country. As an outcome, it provides diversity in the culture especially in the capital city. Space centre and the festivals are very popular in French Guiana.

Tresor Nature Reserve

Zoo de Guyana is a big zoo and has lots of different kinds of wild animals. There can be found a forest walking area and botanical park. If you want to observe the wilderness of the country, you should visit Guyane Zoo as you can find lots of species both animals and plants and visit them in two hours. You can book a tour or get an audio tour in English. Sometimes, there are celebrations in the zoo in the holiday times.

The three little islands are almost ten kilometres from Kourou. The islands were the centre of colonial acts. The structures were transformed into the hotels or service buildings for the visitors. The islands are not so crowded because of the natural life. You can see monkeys or the other wild animals often. The history of the island can also be seen, and you can shop and buy souvenirs.

Musée Départemental De Franconie

You should visit Musée Départemental De Franconia if you come to French Guiana. The museum can be the main place for knowing the country’s past and you can easily get to know about French Guiana. The museum building is also very interesting and made of wood in 19th century. You can learn about the colonial period, people suffered and historical facts. Unfortunately, there is no English information in the museum, everything is written in French.

Ilet la Mere island is famous for its monkeys and the other animals. You can observe them in daily life, there are also many reptiles and wild animals in the island. Camp de la Transportation is in near Saint-Laurent-du-Maroni, the neighbouring city. The place is very scary and used for transportation of the colonies. The processing centre reminds a prison and there are so many cells. If you are interested in colonial period or history, it can be an interesting place for you. You can book an excursion but only in French, you can also discover the place by yourself.

French Guiana is both a space centre and full of tropical jungles and a place for nature lovers. If you are interested in space, you can visit Guiana Space Centre that founded in 1964. The centre is located in its place because the shore is not crowded, enough place to set in and weather is suitable. The other important fact that it is nearly on the equator, so less energy is consumed. The main attractions of the space centre are the Jupiter Control Centre, Ariane facilities and taking photos in such interesting buildings. There are launch sites and rockets in the area. Visitors usually spend three hours in the space centre.

Remire-Montjoly Beach

Remire-Montjoly beach has the most amazing sand and in the shores of Cayenne Sea. It is a typical windy French Guiana beach, you can tan, swim and enjoy the beach. The swimming can be tough because of the wind. There are lots of sea creatures like sea turtles in Cayenne Sea. People usually prefer Remire-Montjoly Beach to observe sea turtles and its water is very clean, but it can get brown from time to time. You can be both in the beach and wilderness with plants. There are also snack bars along the beach so you can taste some traditional snacks. You might also visit the sugar mill that is not used anymore.

Place Victor Schoelcher Market

You can find traditional food in this local market. Victor Schoelcher is the name of the person who stopped slavery in French Guiana. In this open market, you can buy vegetables and tropical fruits, and the other food that local people enjoy eating. There are also places for eating in the marketplace, you can eat noodles, some snacks or whatever local people eat. The place is actually huge, and you can buy gifts, traditional artwork of the people, and food.

What to do and best things to see in French Guiana

Cacao is the most liked place for getting a trip from Cayenne, the place is near Comte River.  The population is mostly farmers and refugees from Laos. They settled around 1970 and have been living since in this village. You can get a forest tour,shop or try some water sports like canoeing. The residents of the village do handicraft and they exhibit their work especially on Sunday. There are many insects in the village and they even have an insect museum.
